When it comes to pushing vehicle technology forward, Volvo has always been a major leader in producing forward-thinking models that the public could understand and embrace. There is a reason Volvo models have surged in popularity with the recent boom of electric and hybrid vehicles, and that is a big focus of their plans for 2021 and 2022.

Is Volvo Planning Another EV?

Yes, Volvo is planning to introduce a second EV for the 2022 model year, a coupe-styled version of the Volvo XC40 Recharge that will run on the same architecture and feature the same powertrain as the compact SUV. This sporty crossover will feature a sloped rear window and roofline like a coupe, but retains the ride height of an SUV. The new model is still going to have seating for five, but the sloping rear window is expected to eat into cargo space above the window line. That said, the lower roof profile will help pit the new Volvo EV up against sporty crossovers like the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLA Coupe by putting in in the unique category of coupe-styled SUVs.

What is Different About the 2022 Volvo XC90?

Volvo’s flagship SUV, the three-row Volvo XC90, is getting a major update for the 2022 model year, and it includes an overhaul of both powertrains and technology. For starters, the Volvo XC90 lineup is expected to be EV and Hybrid only, ditching the current 2.0-liter turbocharged and dualcharged engines, at least on their own. The T8 Plug-in Hybrid models will still feature the dualcharged four-cylinder mill, but alongside an electric motor that boosts output and improves fuel economy.

Will the 2022 Volvo XC90 Be Full Self Driving?

While the 2022 Volvo XC90 will come with the LIDAR system that enables self-driving features, Volvo believes that the safest way to introduce this technology is gradually, and only after thorough testing. As such, the LIDAR that is included with the Volvo XC90 will first be used simply to enhance the lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control functions to allow for greater depth and understanding of the world around you. Still, over-the-air software updates will eventually enable levels of autonomous driving with the Volvo XC90, with the ultimate goal being a hands-off driving experience once the technology is ready and proves safe on open roads.

Are There Any Other New Volvo Models Coming?

Rumors are rampant about an upscale, full-size SUV that will sit above the Volvo XC90 coming for the 2022 model year. As of this writing, it is expected to be called the Volvo XC100, and it will feature three rows of seating and a full-size cargo area. Competition for this model will be models like the BMW X7 and Audi Q7, and with Volvo you can expect a high-end luxury flair on top of the sheer size of the full-size SUV.

There are also rumors of a smaller sport sedan coming to the Volvo global lineup, although it has yet to be seen whether that model will make it to our shores here in the U.S. If it does, expect it to compete with models like the BMW 3 Series and Audi A3, with a smaller footprint and all-wheel drive capability. It is also likely to come only as a hybrid or EV, with Volvo committing to ditching gasoline power altogether by the end of the decade.
